Makos Finish With a Flurry

Sunday the 18th of June was built for football, with clear blue skies and warm sunshine greeting the Mandurah Makos when they arrived in North Fremantle to take on the Phantoms.

The Seniors took the field first and an intense battle ensued. The inside midfielders of both teams were evenly matched so clearances were of a premium. The two teams were locked together at half time and it took some individual brilliance by Mako, Micky Davis, to break the game open and create some positive scoring opportunities.

Brendan Johnston slotted two important goals in the third quarter before the Phantoms launched a comeback. All in all, it was a well-rounded performance by Mandurah with Lloyd Raymond, Victor Tomlinson and Vance Turner among the best players on the day.

Second to take the field were the Masters teams who, again, were evenly matched. Fremantle are a strong opposition at home and Mandurah had their hands full trying to match their outside run and forward firepower. Fortunately, the Mako midfielders were able to win enough contested ball to keep the game close all day.

While the first two games were nail-biters, the same could not be said of the Supers game. After a tight first quarter, Mandurah ran over the top of Fremantle in a powerhouse display.

Kyle Quirk dominated the ruck taps giving silver service to Tim Field and Brendon King while Adam Gray appears to have found his niche across half back where he took a number of intercept marks. Ultimately, it was the physicality of Mandurah, who went hard at the man and at the ball, that lead to them kicking nine goals to one in the second half.
